Why South Africa can become a leading global supplier of both manganese ore and beneficiated ferroalloy products
I recently participated in CRU’s Ferroalloys Connections Summit 2026 in Fort Lauderdale, where I presented on South African Ore & Ferroalloys Markets.
South Africa occupies a unique position in the global manganese market. The country holds more than 70% of the world’s known manganese resources and accounts for almost 40% of the global export market. This gives us a strong foundation to remain a leading supplier of manganese ore, but I believe our opportunity goes much further.
We have the potential to become a leading supplier not only of minerals, but also of beneficiated ferroalloy products. By processing more of our mineral resources locally, South Africa can capture greater value from its mineral endowment while rebuilding industrial capacity and creating opportunities throughout the value chain.
Improving rail performance and the ongoing reform of South Africa’s logistics sector are important steps towards strengthening our ability to supply international markets. However, if we want to unlock the full potential of local beneficiation, competitive and predictable electricity pricing will be equally important.
The opportunity is there. With our manganese resources, established industrial base and ongoing reforms in energy and logistics, South Africa is well positioned to strengthen its role in global manganese and ferroalloy markets.
