The role of Research & Development for sustainable coal mining
At the North-West University’s Inaugural Mining Indaba in Sandton, I delivered a presentation that underscored the significance of South Africa’s coal industry. I began by emphasising the enormity of our country’s coal reserves, a staggering 53 billion tons, and the crucial role they play in meeting 80% of our energy needs.
It’s worth noting that a quarter of South Africa’s coal is exported, a testament to our industry’s global influence and its pivotal role in shaping energy markets worldwide. I further highlighted the industry’s evolution, particularly the integration of cutting-edge technologies like 5G and AI, which are reshaping the landscape of mining. This transformation underscores the imperative of upskilling our workforce for success in the digital era.
Recognising the collective responsibility, investing in Research & Development and fostering partnerships with universities are crucial steps towards ensuring sustainable coal mining practices. This collaborative approach between coal miners and institutions of higher learning not only addresses global challenges but also nurtures the next generation of leaders, instilling a sense of shared commitment and progress.
