FFF Carbon Conference | The Evolving Story of Coal: What Will Its Role Be in The Future?

Coal continues to be a dominant source of energy globally

I recently spoke at the FFF Carbon Conference in Middelburg, Mpumalanga on the future role of coal. The fact is that coal’s dominance in the global energy mix will prevail for many years to come. Along with gas and nuclear, coal has remained one of the world’s leading energy resources for the past 22 years and this pattern is likely to continue going forward.

Compared to renewables, coal is affordable and does not depend on the availability of natural elements like the sun and wind. Lastly, coal mining trends show that there is still appetite to produce and consume coal especially in Asian markets. Currently 398 new coal mining projects are under consideration globally with India and China accounting for 2/3.
